Stuff what I've worked on
I've been a translator for fun a lot longer than for a living. I got my start in high school scanlating a manga I liked when the group doing it at the time fell several months behind, then dipped my toes into fansubbing during college, working on a few seasonal shows and movies with a handful of what few groups were still alive in 2017. I continued fansubbing off and on after that, and in 2021, I started a group of my own to help put together a patch for a VN I'd translated. I still fansub occasionally, though I'm much less involved in the rotting carcass of the scene now that I have a job and something vaguely resembling a life if you squint really hard.
What I'm trying to say is I've done a lot of random stuff over the years, some of which I'm not proud of, some of which got ruined by Too Many Cooks Syndrome, and some of which was just kind of meh. On this page, I'm only going to list the stuff I consider noteworthy. Not gonna link to anything because if you're the sort of person interested in fansubbers' work, you already know how to find it. And if you don't, git gud.
- Summer Pockets (Spring 2025 TV anime) - Lonesome, my editor, talked me into doing this with him. The man loves Summer Pockets enough to make the white-haired girl his profile picture on Discord, and if my calling her "the white-haired girl" just now didn't clue you in, I have not even sniffed the source material. I have neither the time nor desire to read it in preparation for the anime, so I'm trusting him to take a sledgehammer to my translation, rather than a chisel. But then, when has he ever used a chisel? Since neither of us has the technical skills to sub anime, he's also rounded up the gang who worked on...
- ATRI ~My Dear Moments~ (Summer 2024 TV anime) - Summer Pockets is basically ATRI but again. This was another anime adaptation of a VN Lonesome liked and convinced our fansubbing friends in Kaleido to work on. Light, petzku, and Nazaki are longtime friends of mine in the fansubbing scene, and they've proven their skills time and time again. I'm truly lucky to have met these talented individuals.
- Attack on Titan: The Final Season (Winter 2022 TV anime, partial) - In Winter 2022, fansubbing group DameDesuYo enlisted my help in translating MAPPA's installment of Attack on Titan. Unfortunately, I had to bow out right around when the Rumbling happened because that's when I was moving to Japan and finally starting the job I had lined up. AoT aired past midnight on Sundays, and I couldn't exactly stay up until the wee hours of the morning translating it when I had work on Mondays. Come to think of it, I don't know what they did with the show after I left...
- Senmomo: A Billowing Bladestorm, A Persica Princess (2016 eroge, translated in 2021) - It was the pandemic, and I was consooming more VNs than you could shake a stick at. This little gem by August, a company with a very high average quality to their games, enthralled me, and after I read it for the first time, I decided I'd have a go at translating it. For about six weeks, I devoted nearly every waking moment of my life to the pursuit, never dipping below sixteen hours of work a day. Needless to say, that was the act of a lunatic, and not something I'd ever repeat even if I somehow ended up with the opportunity. I'm already known for being a fast translator, but that little anecdote is so outlandish that to this day, the mods at VNDB have my release listed as MTL because they straight-up don't believe I could've done it legitimately. When I finished the base translation, I recruited people to help with the other aspects of VN translation (image editing, hacking, etc.), and over the next several years, we slowly but surely got through it. Now all the work is done, and we're in our final QC phase. Though really, if we had to, we could just release the thing now. But a couple members of the team have been looking forward to QCing the game, and I want to give them that chance. A responsible team leader would probably be checking in on them, though.
- Fate/stay night Heaven's Feel (Three anime movies in the late 2010's, translated during the pandemic) - My first work fully with Kaleido, though I believe they partnered with SCY to release it. Was a lot of fun working with Light on this one, since he actually knew what makes a good translation. Also was a lot of fun translating best girl's route.
- Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale (2017 anime movie) - Probably the highlight of my early fansubbing days. I had a lot of fun translating this one.
